Can a Current Brutal Communist Dictator Go To Heaven? Fidel Castro Hopes So

fidel

From GetReligion's The Last Temptation of Castro (linkage and emphasis theirs except I italicized the quote from Fidel's daughter.): Fidel Castro will be received back into the communion of the Roman Catholic Church during Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the island in March, the Italian press is reporting. If true, this is a remarkable story — and one that has yet to catch the attention of editors this side of the Atlantic. On 1 Feb 2012, La Republicca — [Italy’s second largest circulation daily newspaper, La Republicca follows a center-left political line and is strongly anti-clerical; not anti-Catholic per se but a critic of … [Read more...]

March For Life Numbers Woefully Misrepresented

Just take a look at this picture. Again, where was all the media coverage of this amazing event? From GetReligion (emphasis and linkage theirs): On Thursday, we looked at the rather shocking slideshow at the Washington CBS affiliate. It was headlined: Activists Hold Annual March For Life On Roe v. Wade Anniversary But it somehow hadn’t shown a single picture of an activist at the March for Life! Instead, it showed multiple pictures of the same handful of pro-choice protesters who protested the massive March for Life. First, we have an update. Around 7 p.m. on Thursday, three days after the March for Life, the folks at … [Read more...]

Jonah’s Hidden Idol Overthrown by God’s True Grace

Earlier I posted about reading Timothy Keller's book Counterfeit Gods. The earlier posts were about The Conterfeit Religion of Politics (Part 1 and Part 2). Tonight, I want to share some extensive quotes from Chapter Six "The Hidden Idols of Our lives" that brought new life to the story of Jonah that I had not heard before. It is stunning. I believe you need to get the book to get the full impact of course. I don't want to add too much of my own commentary because this has really dove-tailed into what I alluded to earlier about the Lord rocking my world a few weeks ago regarding grace. I want to write more about that in a separate … [Read more...]

The Counterfeit Religion of Politics Part 2

cropped-beginning.jpg

I've gotten interesting feedback concerning The Counterfeit Religion of Politics and am encouraged to continue to post along those lines. Background: I was involved in politics, more than just a blogger with an opinion, between 2003 and 2007. Some would say, and did, that I was a "political operative."  That is highly exaggerated in an attempt to undermine my main focus of ministry. I only exercised the same civil liberties over 300 million Americans can exercise at will. That said, I do believe God opened up some amazing doors (testifying in Massachusetts, sharing my testimony in the Federal Senate (the actual Senate) building to a … [Read more...]

The Counterfeit Religion of Politics

I am currently reading Timothy Keller's book Counterfeit Gods and it is amazing. I just started the chapter The Power and The Glory: A World Possessed and this quote lept out at me ... ... Ernest Becker wrote that in a society that has lost the reality of God, many people will look to romantic love to give them the fulfillment they once found in religious experience. Nietzsche, however, believed it would be money that would replace God. But there is another candidate to fill this spiritual vacuum. We can also look to politics. We can look upon our political leaders as “messiahs,” our political policies as saving doctrine, and turn our … [Read more...]
